APPLY: Active Listening and Non-Verbal Communication

Objective: Develop advanced listening skills and non-verbal awareness through systematic practice and real-world application.

Part A: Listening Level Assessment and Baseline
  1. Current Listening Audit: For 5 consecutive workdays, track your listening level in different contexts:
    • Meeting Settings:
      • Rate each meeting interaction (1=Level 1, 2=Level 2, 3=Level 3)
      • Note what caused you to operate at different levels
      • Identify patterns in when you listen most/least effectively
    • One-on-One Conversations:
      • Document your listening quality with different people
      • Notice who you listen to most effectively and why
      • Track instances where you were formulating responses instead of listening
    • Casual Interactions:
      • Assess your presence during informal conversations
      • Note distractions that pull you away from active listening
      • Identify opportunities where deeper listening could have been valuable
  2. Non-Verbal Awareness Baseline:
    • Self-Assessment:
      • Record yourself during a phone conversation (focus on your own non-verbals)
      • Watch the recording on mute and analyze your body language
      • Identify unconscious habits or distracting behaviors
    • Other-Awareness Practice:
      • Spend 15 minutes daily observing colleagues’ non-verbal communication
      • Practice identifying engagement vs. discomfort signals
      • Notice alignment/misalignment between verbal and non-verbal messages
  3. Communication Impact Analysis:
    • Ask 3 trusted colleagues for honest feedback about your listening skills
    • “When do you feel most heard in our conversations?”
    • “What could I do to be a better listener?”
    • “How well do I pick up on non-verbal cues?”
Part B: Focused Listening Skill Development
  1. Level 2 Listening Mastery: Daily Practice Protocol:
    • Choose 3 conversations daily where you commit to Level 2 listening
    • Use these techniques:
      • Complete attention on speaker (no multitasking)
      • Reflective statements: “It sounds like you’re saying…”
      • Clarifying questions: “Help me understand…”
      • Emotional recognition: “I can hear the frustration…”
  2. Documentation:
    • What did you learn that you would have missed otherwise?
    • How did the speaker respond to your increased attention?
    • What felt different about these conversations?
  3. Level 3 Listening Development: Advanced Awareness Practice:
    • In meetings, listen for group dynamics and energy shifts
    • Notice what’s not being said directly
    • Pay attention to environmental factors affecting communication
    • Observe patterns across multiple interactions
  4. Specific Techniques:
    • “Global listening” for 10 minutes during each team meeting
    • Practice reading room energy and unspoken concerns
    • Notice power dynamics and underlying tensions
  5. Non-Verbal Intelligence Building: Observation Exercises:
    • Practice identifying the “Big 4” non-verbal categories:
      • Engagement indicators
      • Stress/discomfort signals
      • Authority/confidence markers
      • Emotional leakage
  6. Calibration Practice:
    • Observe baseline behavior for frequent interaction partners
    • Notice deviations from their normal patterns
    • Practice reading micro-expressions and subtle cues
Part C: Integrated Application and Advanced Skills
  1. Strategic Listening Implementation:High-Stakes Conversations:
    • Apply Level 3 listening to important negotiations or discussions
    • Use listening intelligence to understand underlying motivations
    • Leverage non-verbal awareness to gauge true reactions to your proposals
  2. Team Dynamics Navigation:
    • Use listening skills to identify team conflicts or tensions
