APPLY: Oral Communication Mastery Challenge

Objective: Develop and demonstrate structured oral communication skills in real workplace scenarios.

Part A: Framework Foundation
  1. PREP Framework Mastery: Using these 5 common workplace scenarios where you need to give quick, persuasive responses, write a 60-90 second response using PREP:
    • Recommending a solution to a problem
    • Disagreeing with a colleague’s approach
    • Requesting resources or support
    • Providing status updates on projects
    • Responding to unexpected questions in meetings
  2. Vocal Technique Assessment: Record yourself delivering all 5 PREP responses. Analyze for:
    • Pace: Are you speaking at an appropriate speed for comprehension?
    • Pauses: Are you using strategic silence for emphasis?
    • Pitch: Are you varying your tone to maintain engagement?
    • Volume: Are you projecting confidence without overpowering?
    • Articulation: Are your words clear and professional?
  3. Improvement Planning: Based on your recordings, identify:
    • Which vocal elements need the most work
    • Specific techniques you’ll practice (pace control, strategic pauses, etc.)
    • How you’ll practice these techniques daily
Part B: Persuasion Strategy Development
  1. Influence Opportunity Identification: Select one important idea, proposal, or change you need to “sell” at work:
    • Describe the specific outcome you want to achieve
    • Identify the key decision-makers and influencers
    • Analyze what motivates these stakeholders
  2. Multi-Principle Persuasion Planning: For your selected opportunity, identify how to apply at least 4 of Cialdini’s principles:
    • Reciprocity: What value can you provide first?
    • Commitment/Consistency: How does this align with their stated goals?
    • Social Proof: Who else has succeeded with this approach?
    • Authority: What expertise/credibility do you bring?
    • Liking: What common ground can you establish?
    • Scarcity: What makes this opportunity unique or time-sensitive?
  3. Presentation Structure Design: Create a 3-5 minute persuasive presentation combining:
    • Clear structure (Problem-Solution-Benefit or similar framework)
    • Multiple influence principles woven throughout
    • Emotional connection combined with logical reasoning
    • Specific call to action with timeline
Part C: Real-World Implementation
  1. PREP in Action: Over 5 consecutive workdays, consciously use the PREP framework in real situations and Document each use in the form below:
    • Day 1-2: Use PREP for routine responses and updates
    • Day 3-4: Apply PREP when disagreeing or providing critical feedback
    • Day 5: Use PREP for more complex recommendations or proposals
  2. Persuasion Presentation Delivery: Deliver your planned persuasive presentation to the appropriate audience:
    • Schedule the meeting/presentation opportunity
    • Execute your multi-principle influence strategy
    • Pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal responses
    • Document immediate feedback and follow-up questions
  3. Vocal Presence Practice: During all Week 2 interactions, consciously apply your vocal technique improvements:
    • Practice your identified improvement areas
