Week 2 Lesson 4
General Workplace Professionalism and Team Communication

Section 1: Overview

Every profession depends on effective communication. Instructions must be understood, questions must be asked respectfully, and introductions set the tone for trust and collaboration. This week, you’ll practice both listening accuracy and professional communication in realistic scenarios. The purpose of this lesson is to demonstrate that you can interact clearly, respectfully, and professionally—qualities that employers value as much as technical skill.

Section 2: Apply – Skill Demonstration

Goal:

Students demonstrate workplace communication skills by accurately relaying instructions, introducing themselves professionally, and documenting evidence of consistent practice.

  1. Define professionalism in professional workplaces.
  2. Demonstrate strategies for effective team communication.
  3. Identify behaviors that build trust and credibility on the jobsite.
  4. Apply communication skills in safety-related scenarios.

Assignment:

  1. Part A – Communication Scenarios
    • Choose one of the following practical scenarios and complete all required components:
      • Option 1: Instruction Relay Exercise
        • Ask a friend, family member, or peer to explain a simple task (examples: making a sandwich, setting a table, organizing tools).
        • Write down their instructions exactly as you hear them.
        • Repeat the instructions back to them from memory or notes, and then compare where your version differed.
        • Write a short summary (100–150 words) describing what you learned about listening accuracy.
        • Draft a professional follow-up question that would respectfully clarify the task. (Example: “Just to make sure I understand, should the tools be organized by size or type?”)
        • Submit your notes, summary, and drafted question..
      • Option 2: Professional Introduction Practice
        • Record a 30–45 second professional introduction as if meeting a new supervisor on your first day of an apprenticeship.
        • Include:
          • Your name
          • Your career interest
          • Your current goal (what you’re learning or preparing for)
          • A respectful question about the jobsite or project
        • Submit your audio or video recording (or written transcript if recording isn’t possible).
  2. Part B – Ongoing Daily Practice
    • For three consecutive days this week, deliberately practice one communication skill from this lesson during real-life interactions (school, work, or home).
      • Choose from:
        • Active Listening: Repeat or summarize what someone said to confirm understanding.
        • Professional Introduction: Introduce yourself to a new person using your name, interest, and a question.
        • Clarifying Instructions: Ask one follow-up question to ensure directions are clear.
      • Keep a short log for each day that includes:
        • The date
        • Who you interacted with (first name or general role only)
        • What communication skill you practiced
        • What you learned or noticed about the interaction
      • Example:
        • Day 1: “Asked my instructor to clarify a measurement. I realized I usually assume I understand, but didn’t this time. Asking saved me from a mistake.”
